Interview With Propers
Prior to the beginning of pre-season training for 2008. KangasFC.com managed to catch up with the new coach for a few questions...
Q. How long have you wanted to coach?
A. I have always toyed with the idea of coaching after footy and when the opportunity to coach Kanga’s came up, I thought it was the best chance to do so.
Q. What is it that attracted you to coaching?
A. The challenge that it will provide. Coaching makes you think about the strategies of the game and you also need to be fully aware of player management.
Q. Could you tell us about any previous coaching experience you’ve had?
A. I coached the Railways U15's side a few years back but this is my first go at senior level.
Q. Will you be a Player-Coach? Or just coach?
A. At this stage it will be as a player coach with Boathy the assistant, but it will be assessed on whether I can get a kick or not.
Q. What has been your family's reaction to the move?
A. Bit of concern about the amount of time it may take up but they are very supportive.
Q. How would you describe your knowledge of our current squad?
A. I know most of the senior squad quite well but I will have to get to know the younger players a bit better.
Q. Does anything strike you immediately as key areas for improvement?
A. The talent is definitely there, I think team unity can be worked on and fitness is always an area for improvement.
Q. Are you considering any changes to our game style?
A. The team had a couple of very good wins against Mines and some very close ones against Railways, so I can't see any wholesale changes but I definitely want to fine tune the running game.
Q. Assuming no high-profile recruits are picked up, how much improvement do you see in our current squad? I.e. Can they go all the way?
A. We are hopefully about to pick up some handy players that will bolster the squad but I am very confident that Kanga’s will have a very good year. As far as improvement, I would like to think we could aim for an appearance in the GF but it's a long way to go before that happens.
Q. Anything else you'd like to say?
A. On a personal note, I will also be bringing my wife Louise and kids Jake (4) and Allysa (18 months) to the club.
