23-06-08 - Friday Night Football!
Kalgoorlie v JPC
Date 27/6/08
Time 5pm
Venue SIR RICHARD MOORE Oval
Friday night football returns to Kalgoorlie oval with Kangas and the Saints doing battle in both the under 14’s and 16’s divisions for the Cobber Rogers trophy.
The games are an annual event and is in its third year since its inception in 2006, the biggest sub-junior game of the year apart from the finals and players and officials from both clubs can’t wait to get back onto Sir Richard Moore Oval, at this stage the only sub junior games to be held there this year.
The Cobber Rogers trophy was introduced in 2006 and named after Cobber Rogers who is a legend in Goldfields sporting circles, he is a life member of Kangas and has helped out JPC in his association with the Masters Football Club and is very well respected in the general community.
The under 14’s clashes have seen Kangas hold the trophy on both occasions but we will need to produce something special on Friday as the Saints have been the big improvers this year.
The under 16’s clash should be a beauty as they are very evenly matched and a lot will depend on availability of players with Saints being hard hit by injuries and Cale Delbridge unavailable due to athletic commitments in Malaysia. On a brighter note the return of Kane Maffina is a possibility and a decision will be made if he can get through Thursday's training session.
Saints players to watch out for include Jordan Grljusich, Matt Braham and young guns, Will Mapleson and Shaun Rundell. Meanwhile Kangas will keep Saints guessing on the availability of last seasons under 16's association fairest and best winner and Kangas club champion Nick Hay.
Chad McDonald was injured on Saturday and unlikely to play, Centre half forward Reece Blackaby is also unavailable. Kangas players to watch out for include Blake Schoppe, the improving Jordan Viskovich, and Blane Wilson who is beginning to find his feet after a horror run of injuries last season, the improving Gary Sidebottom could be one to watch as well.
Kalgoorlie have a very young squad and have a host of young guns including the giant Clay Dorotich and Hayden Marr. The battle of the coaches will no doubt play a vital part as the bench players on both sides will likely come from the under 14’s and the rotations and match ups will be vital. Rod Braham, the premiership winning coach will battle it out with his counterpart Dave Black, a very experienced coach who has guided the under 14’s to back-to-back Cobber Rogers trophies .
Special thanks to Shari Freeman and the Kalgoorlie City Council for the use of Sir Richard Moore Oval, along with Rhonda Worthington and Nardia Turner from the Goldfields Football League and the Goldfields Junior Football League. Special thanks to Colin Grove and Shane Liddelow and the Umpires Association for their support every year.
